STEM Skills Strategy

Growing this talent pool requires action across many sectors such as schools, tertiary institutions, government, industry and the community, all working towards a common goal.

The Department for Industry, Innovation and Science works to facilitate collaboration across these various sectors by implementing coordinated action to develop a future workforce with the skills to drive innovation.

The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Skills Strategy outlines policy and program priorities for developing a workforce with strong skills in STEM, as well as the creativity and entrepreneurship skills that empower individuals to take their ideas through to commercial success.

The Investing in Science Action Plan outlines a range of measures to deliver on the STEM Skills Strategy.

Pre-Service Teacher Education

Bridging the Gap is a collaborative research project initiated by the State Government which sees Flinders University, schools and industry work together to improve student teachers’ ability to inspire high school students and reinforce the value of learning and understanding science, technology engineering and maths (STEM). It aims to test models for increasing the understanding of high school students about how STEM is used in real-world contexts, by allowing student teachers to experience first-hand the practical application of STEM skills within industry.

The goal is to contribute to the development of industry’s future workforce, and South Australia’s STEM skills-based economy.
